Getting rid of extra furniture and electronics can be stressful - particularly when you're moving. It is no secret that getting rid of a used sofa, mattress, or computer is difficult. However, it is important to remember that there are many different options for what you can do with excess items in your home, so it shouldn't be as daunting as it might seem at first. Here are a few of the most efficient and productive ways to get rid of extra furniture and electronics:
1.) Sell Them
If you aren't interested in donating your used furniture or electronic items, you might also consider selling them. This can be gratifying in that you recieve monetary compensation for your items; however, it might not be very morally rewarding. Furthermore, the items that you are selling would likely be much better used by someone who never had the chance to use something like them before. If you do decide to sell your old furniture and electronics, then it is important to determine an appropriate value for them based on market conditions and their condition. In order to determine the appropriate value, conduct research on how much a new ver
sion of your item is currently being sold for and make sure that your asking price is less than that amount. Resources such as eBay and Craigslist can be helpful in determining the exact value that others are asking for the same item that you have. For example, you might have a used Ikea desk purchased in 2012 that you are trying to sell. By finding other sellers who are trying to sell the same model of 2012 Ikea desk, you can adjust your asking price so that it is similar to those of others.
2.) Throw Them Away
While it might be tempting to just take your old mattress, couch, or computer downstairs to the pavement to be collected by a garbage truck, this is an extremely inefficient and counterproductive way to deal with excess items in your apartment. For example, the time and effort that you must exert alone in order to get heavy items such as furniture and electronics down from an apartment to the road is taxing physically. Moreover, the items that are thrown away are not able to be immediately used by people in need. Your used, yet fully intact couch, for example, might be better served by being more quickly transfered to a family in need in a nearby community.
3.) Donate Them to a Nonprofit
There are countless nonprofits in need who are more than willing to come and collect your furniture and electronics so that they can be used by someone else. This is a great way to dispose of unwated apartment items because instead of throwing your electronic and furniture items away, your items can be used to benefit other people. While some may be concerned that personal data and information might be passed on to future owners, most nonprofit organizations prioritize clearing this information for safety reasons. One of the easiest electronic items to donate is your old computer. Because technology is developing at such a rapid rate and people tend to upgrade their electronic devices like computers as frequently as every few years, donating those devices to nonprofits is particularly helpful for both the donor and the recipient.
